8 Essentials for a Sewing Kit
Whether you are a seamstress or not, you need a sewing kit for your home. Having some of the basic sewing supplies on hand will come in handy for last minute repairs and projects.
If you’re a beginner in sewing, there are a few essential items you’ll need to have in your sewing kit. Here are some of the most important items to consider as you put your sewing kit together.
Scissors: Invest in a good pair of fabric scissors that are sharp and designed for cutting fabric. You might also need a smaller pair of scissors or snips for trimming threads. I also included a pair of pinking shears for craft projects. Remember to never use these scissors for cutting paper or other things! It will ruin them and they will not cut fabric easily….if at all.
Needles: You’ll need a variety of needles, including hand-sewing needles and machine needles. Make sure to have different sizes and types of needles, depending on the type of fabric you’ll be sewing.
Pins: Sewing pins are essential for holding fabric in place while you sew. Choose straight pins with a large head for easy handling.
Pin Cushion: A pin cushion is the best way to keep your pins handy and easy to get to when needed. There are a variety of pin cushions on the market today, but I still love my vintage tomato 🙂
Thread: You’ll need a range of thread colors to match the fabric you’re sewing. Start with basic colors like black, white, and beige, and then add more colors as you need them.
Tape measure: A tape measure is important for measuring fabric and making sure your seams are the right size.
Buttons: You never know when you’ll need to replace a button on one of your garments. Having a nice collection comes in handy, but start out with some standard shapes and sizes in neutral colors.
Seam Ripper: A seam ripper comes in handy when you need to repair or sew a new hem in a garment. I’ve also found a seam ripper handy when doing multiple craft projects.

I was a freshman in college when I learned to sew for the first time. I purchased a typical sewing box from Walmart. While it served the purpose, it didn’t match anything in my home and I kept it stashed away in a closet.
A few months ago, I found this cute little cabinet at a yard sale. I purchased it and my sweet husband redid it for me. Now I feel like my sewing supplies can be anywhere in the house for convenience.
The paint color is neutral and matches my home decor. Right now, it’s sitting in my dining room and no one would think it held sewing supplies 🙂 So think outside the box when you’re choosing something to hold your sewing supplies!
